The story of Niranjan Shah begins in the small village of Matadaha, Gujarat, India, where he was born in 1944. Growing up without electricity or running water, Shah’s early life was shaped by his community’s deep value for education despite challenging circumstances.
After graduating from Birla Engineering College at Sardar Patel University in 1967, Shah and his wife immigrated to the United States in 1970 to pursue greater opportunities. His educational journey continued at the University of Mississippi, where he earned a master’s degree in civil engineering, laying the foundation for his future endeavors in Chicago.
Shah’s professional life in Chicago began at Sargent & Lundy Engineering, where he worked as a structural engineer. However, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to establish Globetrotters Engineering Corporation in 1974, initially as its only full-time employee. From these modest beginnings, Shah built what would become one of Chicago’s most successful engineering firms.
Under his leadership, Globetrotters expanded to employ over 250 professionals specializing in engineering, architecture, and construction management. The firm has left an indelible mark on Chicago’s infrastructure, contributing to iconic projects including the expansion of O’Hare International Airport and Chicago’s 911 Emergency Communications Center.
Shah’s impact extends beyond his professional achievements. As a trailblazer in Chicago’s business community, he has championed economic development and minority representation. His appointment to Mayor Richard Daley’s Economic Development Committee allowed him to shape initiatives that fueled Chicago’s growth.
His civic engagement includes serving as vice chairman of the statewide Asian-American Advisory Committee under Senator Paul Simon and as a member of the Illinois State Police Merit Board. Shah’s commitment to community service has created pathways for diverse leaders in Chicago’s business landscape.
In October 2023, Globetrotters Engineering Corporation celebrated its 50th anniversary, with Illinois Governor JB Pritzker proclaiming it “Globetrotters Engineering Corporation Day” in recognition of the firm’s contributions to communities across the state.
